Play therapy

Did you know play is a powerful tool for addressing cognitive, behavioral, and emotional challenges?

PLAY REALLY IS THAT IMPORTANT.

Does this sound familiar?

You are not quite sure where to begin and what you should be doing. You feel the weight of being with your child, and often wonder when they will explode or shut down next?

Despite being amazing, creative, energetic, caring, and playful, children can feel overwhelmed by their big feelings and play therapy can help.

Why is play so important?

Play is essential to human growth, development, learning, & cultivating relationships.

Play is a natural process that:

  • Builds trust and mastery

  • Fosters learning and acceptable behaviors

  • Regulates emotions

  • Reduces anxieties

  • Promotes creative thinking and problem-solving

  • Encourages open communication

  • Elevates spirit and self-esteem

Play is our first language. Just as adults use words to communicate, children use play. When playing, we express thoughts and feelings that might otherwise remain hidden.

What can I expect?

When a child comes to play therapy, sometimes the child uses words and other times they use play or art to communicate and express thoughts and emotions. Similar to working with adults, the play therapist will reflect the child’s feelings, point out patterns, likes, and dislikes they notice. They may also teach the child techniques to help them identify feelings, cope with their anger, or socialize at school.

And most importantly, the play room is set up to be a safe place for the child to express themselves and process various things in their life. Like in adult therapy, a safe and accepting therapeutic relationship is key to the client’s success in therapy.

Our solution

Your support is vital to the process.

But how long is this going to take?

It is natural to be curious about the length of treatment.

The length of therapy varies for every child and there is really no way to judge how long the process will take. Many factors can play a role in how long an individual will require therapy or benefit from therapy. These include willingness to participate in the therapeutic process, consistency with attendance, past and current environmental factors, support systems in place, and the nature and duration of the symptoms.

Our solution

You are paving the way for a NEW family culture.

You may have grown up in a home that did not always hold space for big emotions or accept you for who you are. I help parents figure out how to get from their current reality to the vision they may have of a healthier family dynamic.

You’re noticing worries, big feelings, and frequent meltdowns in your child and you’re not sure how to respond. You want to help your child to feel safe to experience and share all of their emotions without judgment and you want your child to thrive.

When you bring your child to me for play therapy, I also work with YOU to provide parenting support. I provide education on child development, deeper understanding for why kids behave in certain ways, and how to parent your child with healthy boundaries, compassion, and attunement to their needs.

Got questions?

  • Therapy for your child begins with a parent/caregiver intake. After that, I will meet with your child weekly, assessing and potentially modifying frequency as treatment goals are met.

My approach is collaborative because I recognize that as the caregiver, YOU have the biggest impact on your child’s life. I typically like to check-in with parents monthly, unless more or less collaboration is needed or desired. Requests to check-in can always be accommodated.

  • Yes, a virtual therapy session will be surprisingly similar to what you would experience during a session in an office. The experience will be crafted to meet the unique set of needs, personality traits, and attention span of your child. We’ll use a combination of verbal communication, arts & crafts, storytelling, movement, etc. to meet our therapy goals.
